Sheff Wed Deals with Major Issues, States Independent Regulator

'We will play a key role in football's future' - newly appointed regulator the new chairman

Sheffield Wednesday's ongoing struggles are seen as a "serious issue" and the independent regulator is seeking powers to examine team situations in similar circumstances, the recently named head the official has stated.

Through a comprehensive talk, the chairman, who was appointed on Monday, expressed "sympathy" towards Wednesday's fanbase.

Kogan met with four supporters' associations connected to the football team this week.

The football club have been facing challenges both on and off the pitch in this season, with the club failing to pay players on time on multiple instances, including in September.

"Obviously the club has become a major concern for the league and a major challenge for the sport," Kogan told.

"Sheffield Wednesday is one of the iconic names for football in England and recently we have met supporters' organizations.

"Our aim is to acquire the ability... which will enable us to take the club and similar situations submitted for our review if they require examination and addressed."

Monetary Issues and Ownership Situation

Wednesday's embattled owner the Thai businessman indicated in the summer he would be prepared to relinquish control at their home ground, but he has not been able to secure a deal with prospective buyers.

Failure to pay player wages on time in spring months caused limitations by the league officials in June, stopping Wednesday from completing any recruitment activities for the following recruitment periods, although those limitations were removed in the end of the transfer window.

Authority's Position

Kogan said: "Our role exists to serve the fans of Sheffield Wednesday, Bury or any football club where people are committed to a regional establishment that has existed throughout their lifetimes in many cases.

"I fully appreciate the club's situation, as I do for all the clubs that since 1992 have gone to the wall, or approached financial ruin, for factors unrelated to the fans themselves."

When asked if the oversight body could require an chairman to relinquish a club if they are judged inappropriate, Kogan said: "When asking whether 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the reply is once we collect the information and know what's going on, we will."

But Kogan stressed that forcing owners to sell clubs would be treated as a "last resort" and the regulator would prefer to work with them.

"The final option we would consider is begin intervening in an specific team, an individual owner, without being in a position to cooperate with that owner to try and resolve the challenges confronting the team and the proprietor's dealing with," the chairman stated.

"But the truth is, when you examine the past of football, over the recent generations there have been particular chairmen, not many, but particular people who have shown negligence in the way which they've been managing their teams and eventually don't wish to take responsibility for the future."

'Errors may undo substantial development'

The chairman convened with representatives from 110 clubs to lay out the remit of the regulator on Wednesday and stated it constituted a "proactive meeting" with a "significant participation" from the lower divisions to the top flight.

"It's a job that's actually really important, because should mistakes occur, if the sport makes errors, the remarkable development accomplished necessary will vanish rapidly," the chairman stated.

"And that's what nobody wants in the context of the English game is a major achievement - we've got to keep it going.

"Substantial financial resources entering the sport and has come into football for the last 20 or 25 years, because there are no assurances it will persist in entering the game, which is one of the reasons why I think we have to take a really clear view on potential dangers and naturally, of the coming seasons."

Top Flight Apprehensions

The Premier League opposed the formation of an authority because of apprehensions regarding adverse consequences on the Premier League's sporting equality, but the chairman responded: "I'm absolutely committed to the achievement and development as an economic entity of the top division.

"I of all people understand the worry about compromising the division as a high-quality offering of this country. But at the same time, if you consult with top flight officials after this week's discussion, they would have had a significant degree of comfort -and, in fact, they have been advising us privately they have a considerable comfort."

Partisan Associations

The chairman continues to confront a "thorough examination" by the official appointments authority after he acknowledged providing funds to the opposition group in 2020.

The chairman provided financial support for Culture Secretary the politician's campaign, along with that of the current Prime Minister.

"I have fully disclosed my former ideological connection [with Labour], and that political affiliation came to an end the day the parliamentary committee confirmed my selection," the regulator explained.

"I am presently disconnected from any sort of politics."
